Nexus Recycling is Western Australia’s only used lead acid battery recycling plant and has only commenced operations in 2022. A new building was required that would allow the firm to extract approximately 97% of lead acid battery materials including acid, plastics and metallic lead. The maximum processing capacity of the plant is 43 MT per annum.
As the only company of its kind in Western Australia, Nexus Recycling faced several unique challenges regarding council approvals, especially considering it is the operator of a battery recycling plant.
Obtaining the appropriate council approval to construct a building of this size on the limited amount of land that was available, was also something that required a team that were highly experienced in dealing with the council approval process.
Like many building projects in recent times, the construction of this building was heavily impacted by COVID-19, especially considering that the Nexus management team were all based on the east coast.
Lastly, the site is impacted by a large gradient, so this was another challenge that had to be overcome.
AUSPAN was able to work closely with Nexus Recycling to design their ideal building solution. 3D design concept drawings were used at the initial quoting stage to ensure the features and final result were communicated effectively.
Extensive internal civils including concrete plinths, bunded areas, and lead containment.
Unique fire prevention features that are relevant to a battery recycling plant.
Retaining walls that allow the building to get right up to the boundary.
It was great to work with such a unique company and to come up with practical solutions to overcome the challenges that are associated with a business of this type. I was particularly satisfied by the ability of both the Nexus Recycling and AUSPAN teams to be able to work together, even throughout the COVID-19 related issues that faced two organisations located at either side of the country.
